Turquoise Myths—Facts?
Turquoise jewelry attracts money, success, and love. Its powers include protection, healing, courage, friendship, and luck. It preserves friendships, makes friends of enemies and is a symbol of generosity, sincerity, and affection. Turquoise jewelry strengthens the body, aids in tissue regeneration, creates peace of mind, emotional balance, and a general sense of well being.
Turquoise was carried by physicians of the fifteenth century. They claimed that the stone would counter the harmful effects of poison. They prepared a potion containing finely powdered turquoise, which, as well as proving to be a powerful antidote to scorpion stings, was also considered effective in banishing the pains arising from possession by demons. Looking at turquoise or placing a stone on the eyes was believed to soothe inflamed or strained eyes.
Turquoise is the official birth stone for the month of December.
American Turquoise Mines
Ajax Turquoise
The Ajax turquoise mine is near Royston Nevada and gives us light blue turquoise with dark blue veins. This is one of the newer mines.
Bisbee Turquoise
Located in Bisbee, Arizona, this mine was one of the first to put turquoise on the market. As with much turquoise, this is a copper mine. Bisbee turquoise is known for its dark blue color and black matrix. This mine is now closed.
Battle Mountain Turquoise
This turquoise is highly sought after by collectors as this mine is now closed. Opened in 1934, it produced both green and blue turquoise with a fair amount of matrix.
Cerrillos Turquoise
Located between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico, this turquoise mine was mined by the ancient Pueblo tribes between 1300 and 1600 and is the oldest turquoise mine in North America. Turquoise was later extracted by the San Marcos Pueblo and was traded from Mexico to the east coast. To this day, there are many turquoise dig sites in the area.
Cripple Creek Turquoise
Miners discovered this turquoise mine while looking for cold in Colorado and this mine is still in operation.
Dry Creek Turquoise
Discovered in 1993 near Battle Mountain, Nevada, this mine produces what is known as Sacred Buffalo Turquoise. Ground metals give turquoise its color and, as there are none here, this turquoise has no color. This type of turquoise has been found no where else.
Kingman Turquoise

Morenci Turquoise
The Morenci is located in southeastern Arizona and is a copper mine. The turquoise extracted from here, much carried out by the workers and miners, is a dark blue turquoise with irregular iron pyrite matrix.
Number 8 Turquoise
Calin, Nevada is the home of this turquoise. It was active from the 1930’s through the 1950’s and produced a light, powder-blue turquoise with brown, black, or reddish spider web matrix.
Sleeping Beauty Turquoise
